OUR STORY & MISSION

Funnell & Strebel, Inc. has a rich history of caring for patients in Oklahoma City that began in 1925, when Dr. Joseph Kelso founded the practice in downtown Oklahoma City.
In 1945, Dr. Kelso was joined by his nephew, Dr. Joseph Funnell, who continued practicing with the group until his death in 1971. In 1960, Dr. James Funnell, Dr. Joseph Funnell’s brother, joined the practice after completing his military service. In 1971, Dr. Gary Strebel joined the practice after serving in the United States Air Force and completing his residency in Wisconsin.
Dr. James Funnell and Dr. Gary Strebel played an instrumental role in working with Sister Coletta, then President of Mercy Hospital, in the effort to move Mercy Hospital from its original downtown location to the hospital’s current location. Their involvement reflected the practice’s longstanding commitment not only to caring for individual patients, but also to helping shape the future of healthcare in the Oklahoma City community.
Today, more than 100 years after Dr. Kelso first opened his practice, we continue to honor the foundation established by those who came before us while evolving to meet the changing needs of the patients and families we serve. As Oklahoma City’s oldest continuously operating Obstetrics and Gynecology practice, we are proud to carry forward a legacy of expertise, compassion, and individualized care that has served generations of women in our community.
Dr. Gary Strebel has been a cornerstone of Funnell & Strebel for more than five decades, continuing the legacy established alongside the late Dr. James Funnell. Throughout his career, Dr. Strebel has built lasting relationships with generations of patients, helping shape the compassionate, personalized approach to care that remains at the heart of the practice today.
In 2002, after completing her training in Colorado, Dr. Julie Strebel Hager returned to her hometown of Oklahoma City to join her father in the practice. Bringing a new generation of experience and perspective, she continued the family’s commitment to providing exceptional, individualized care to women and families. Her return marked another important chapter in Funnell & Strebel’s history, carrying the practice’s family tradition of caring for generations of patients into the future.

Our practice has continued to grow and evolve while remaining grounded in the values that have guided us for generations. Dr. Jennifer Strebel, daughter of Dr. Gary Strebel and sister of Dr. Julie Strebel Hager, joined Funnell & Strebel in 2009. During her time with the practice, she carried forward her family’s commitment to compassionate, personalized reproductive and gynecologic care.
In 2026, Dr. Jennifer transitioned from private practice to teaching at St. Anthony Hospital, where she now shares her knowledge, experience, and passion for reproductive and gynecologic healthcare with medical students and residents. Her dedication to educating the next generation of healthcare providers represents another meaningful way she continues to contribute to the field and to the future of women’s healthcare.
Also in 2026, certified nurse practitioner Amber Medico joined Funnell & Strebel after many years of caring for patients at Lakeside Women’s Hospital. Her extensive experience, including years as a labor and delivery nurse, brings a unique perspective to our team. Having cared for patients through some of life’s most meaningful moments, Amber brings an understanding, compassion, and personal connection that complement the individualized care at the heart of our practice.
Today, our multi-generational medical team combines decades of experience with a fresh perspective on healthcare. We strive to create a warm, authentic, and patient-centered environment where every patient feels heard, respected, affirmed, and genuinely cared for.

We recognize that every person’s healthcare journey is unique. Our goal is to provide exceptional, individualized care while honoring each patient’s identity, needs, and goals.
Our mission is simple: to provide compassionate, high-quality reproductive and gynecologic healthcare while building relationships that last for generations.
